What Is the EPI?

South Africa’s Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) is part of a global initiative to ensure all children receive protection against high-risk diseases. These vaccines are free at municipal clinics, and Baby Guardian is one of the few private practices licensed to carry and administer them with the required permit.

Private Vaccines

Private vaccines are not included in the government schedule but offer protection against other serious conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

You may have some questions, and we’re always here to help. If you don’t find your answer below, feel free to WhatsApp us and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

1. Why is the timing of vaccines so important?

Vaccine schedules are carefully designed to match your child’s immune development. Vaccines are timed for when your child’s body can produce the strongest and safest immune response. Following the schedule ensures the best possible protection at the right stages of growth.

2. What happens if my child missed a vaccine?

It’s completely okay. It’s never too late to catch up. I create safe, personalised catch-up plans to make sure your child gets fully protected, without compromising their health or safety.

3. Do I still need to vaccinate my baby if I’m breastfeeding?

Yes. While breastfeeding does offer short-term passive immunity through antibodies, this protection fades over time. That’s why vaccinations usually begin around 6 weeks to help your baby’s own immune system start building long-term defences.

4. Why are some vaccines out of stock?

Vaccines take time to produce due to strict testing, development, and supply chain processes. It’s not uncommon for shortages to occur globally. However, I work closely with reliable suppliers and the Department of Health to ensure minimal disruption to your child’s schedule.

5. Are government vaccines less effective than private ones?

Not at all. Both government and private vaccines are rigorously tested for safety and effectiveness. The main difference is the manufacturer or source. I’ve worked with both for over 15 years and trust the standards applied across the board.
